The Split

Today has been a whirlwind for me. Kennedy is no longer on cannula as of this morning, and the doctor brought me over to tour Special Care when she was making rounds. It is very much like a regular hospital room with a central nurses station, and I was impressed with the facilities. Then I found out that all of the babies who are MRSA positive would be moving into one nursery inside the NICU. Since Kennedy is positive and Drake is not they would be in separate nurseries, or the other option was to move Kennedy to Special Care since they would be split either way. Brian and I discussed the options and requested advice from the doctor. Bottom line...Kennedy was ready for Special Care if we were, and we wanted what was best for her; therefore, Kennedy's nurse packed her up and we made the move. It was actually much easier to move her things than ours. We had really become quite comfortable in our room 83 days into our journey.

It is bittersweet because even though she and I get to stay in the same room over in Special Care, Drake is a building away in the NICU. I feel completely torn. I used to spend my days going back and forth between cribs and now I will spend them between buildings. I am excited and nervous about our first night together over here in our new room. We are having our first "girls night" because Brian won't be here until the morning. I am comforted in knowing Drake's favorite primary night nurse is with him tonight. Hopefully, Drake can join us soon and then we can all go home together.

  1. Oh Annie! What bittersweet news...So happy you and baby girl get to be together all the time now but I know its hard having Drake in another building. That's the one thing as a mom that has always been hard on me...when both girls have something on the same night and you just want to split yourself in two so you can be in 2 places at once. Hopefully Kennedy's move was her way of saying, "Come on Drake, here is our next step and we get to go home..." continued love and prayers being sent every day.

  2. There is no better motivation than a boy who misses his mommy and sissy--I have no doubt Drake will be with yall in no time! There is just something about boys and their mommas...my hubby never moves quicker than when we are doing something with his mom ;-) so i just bet Drake is gonna catch up quick!

Big changes, and so exciting! A room together! How was it? Did you sleep okay? I am sure there was some unrest, but it is nice that you are so comfortable with the nurses and that you know Drake will be taken good care of.

Prayer continue! Home is just around the corner!

  3. I know it must be hard to have your kiddos so far apart, but that's so wonderful that Kennedy is ready to move to Special Care! Good luck tonight!

  4. I can't imagine how torn you must feel. It's wondeful that you get to stay with Kennedy overnight in special care. Our NICU didn't have anything like that. We never got to spend the night with out twins until they were ready to come home. We "roomed in" with them after 133 days and came home the next day. It sounds like Kennedy is doing remarkably well at just 80+ days. Drake will be there with you all in special care soon. I love that your NICU is set up this way. It's going to make it a lot easier to feed your babies if you are able to spend the night with them.
