Summer Fun Combined with Hard Work

We always look forward to our weekends...Family Time! This weekend we enjoyed lots of family time with Uncle Matt and Papa visiting! Brian and I have always loved the outdoors, and sweet Kennedy is following right along in our footsteps. “Outside!” is a constant request from our little Miss. It is far too hot outside for Drake (the vent/trach make it much hotter to him than us); therefore, we split our time between outside playing with Kennedy and indoors playing with Drake.

During the week when Brian asks Kennedy about her day on the phone, she tells him “dood” (good). When asked how old she is, she says “two.” She holds her hand up at the same time to show two fingers, but it looks much more like the “no” sign in sign language than the number two. It’s still pretty cute and she beams with pride! I can’t help but smile and giggle every time! She LOVES her bubba and desperately wants to interact with him. She brings him toys, books, and even tries to share her drinks and snacks. If she is leaving the house or going outside to play, she is always good about saying, “bye-bye, bubba!” And every time she says, “I love you” to Drake...It melts my heart! When she is able to make him smile, we all get excited!

Drake completes his therapies pretty much daily throughout each week. We continue working on his goals each and every day...including the weekends. No rest for the weary. We know through hard work, perseverance and our faith in God, all things are possible. Drake is full of potential, as is Kennedy, and we are here to cultivate both of our kiddos each step of the way. Don’t worry...we throw in plenty of fun and laughter along our journey!

Snuggles!

Drake says, "this is harder than it looks."

That smile :)

Story time with bubba.

SHARK!!!!!

Cheese!!!

Practicing sitting!

Talking to Gran!!! This boy knows voices :)

Apparently she isn't a Katy Perry fan :)

"Dinner!" Technically it's lunch, but Kennedy calls every meal dinner.

Cheese!!! One man's trash is truly another's treasure. Aunt Mere's neighbors were throwing this water table out for trash pickup. She had uncle Aaron rescue and clean it for Kennedy. We tossed in a few bath toys and she loves it!!!

Busy! Busy! Busy!

Last week we loaded up the car and took Drake out for his first appointment rockin' his brand-new wheelchair/stroller. It is amazing how much easier it is to pack the car for a trip in Tyler vs a trip to Dallas. Of course we still must have the necessities and emergency bag, but it is a light load in comparison. This visit was with the orthotist and Drake was fitted for leg braces. He really seemed to like the doctor, and he was surprisingly calm while his leg molds were made. He will not need these braces to be worn constantly, but they will add needed support for his ankles during the time in his stander. We were lucky that this appointment was during summertime and one of our good friends was willing to babysit Kennedy. I'm sure Kennedy would have loved to have tagged along, but it was much easier with just our little man.

Our weekend was busy, busy, busy! I was able to enjoy a much needed brunch and a pedicure with my girlfriends! I'm thankful to the salon for honoring my expired gift card, and to my friends for finally making me go. Brian and Kennedy ran some errands and had a daddy/daughter lunch date, and Drake was perfectly content hanging out with his sweet nurse. Saturday night Brian and I enjoyed the cooler temperatures by joining our friends for a patio dinner...a kid free dinner! Not kids eat free...no kids with us. Drake was with his night nurse and Kennedy stayed with a babysitter for the 1st time! Both kids did great and as much as we missed them, an adult night out was a nice rare treat!

Sunday marked the day of Gran & Poppy's 40th wedding anniversary! Such a special occasion called for a celebration! The party took place at my brother and sister-in-law's house...2hrs from our home. After going back and forth with our decision, we decided not to take Drake. He has been doing so good and we certainly did not want to risk anything that could cause a setback. The day would have been perfectly complete with him there, but it's about what is best for him not our preference. We hope to celebrate many more milestones as a family in the coming years; therefore, Drake will have plenty of opportunities to join the party.

Getting leg molds made :)

He was calm and cool as a cucumber.

Pretend feeding bubba!

Lunch date with daddy!

Mommy's day out!

Kennedy and baby cousin Elizabeth.

Cousin Jacob stealing a hug!

Gran & Poppy (or Mimi & Bobby as Jacob would say...actually, he has Kennedy saying Mimi and Bobby, too!) I'm pretty sure they think they are saying Poppy when they say Bobby, but Mimi is way off :)

Almost the whole crew...just missing Drakey

Play time!

Hugs for Poppy!

Happy boy!!!

Working out!

Caught in the act...she is standing in Harlee's water bowl!!!

Tummy time!

Nap time!

New Adventures

Over the weekend we took our first partial family trip to our local zoo. I say partial because Drake was not able to join us this time, but we are hopeful he will be with us on our next visit! We had such a fun morning, and we loved seeing Kennedy's reactions to all of he the animals. We thought it would be a fun experience to feed the birds in the aviary; however, as soon as a hungry bird landed on top of Kennedy's head, she was finished with that experience. Brian said, "Our daughter was in the middle of a traumatizing situation and your first reaction was to take a picture?" I quickly reminded him that he was also in my photograph and he was laughing. No worries...she was laughing at the penguins shortly after; therefore, I think it is safe to say she isn't scarred for life. However, she may not be asking us for a pet bird any time soon!

Drake has still been rocking all of his therapies! His hard work is paying off in the form of strength...he amazes me! He is the epitome of hard work and determination. He was rewarded with his brand new wheelchair/stroller on Monday! It was delivered, fitted and we learned the ins and outs along with all of the bells and whistles. We were perfectly happy with the loner chair we have been using since March, and this new chair is better than anything we could have possibly imagined! It has a bracket to hold his vent and straps to hold his tubing in place. There really are no words to explain how exciting that is or how much easier it will make transporting.

Thinking back to two years ago living in the NICU with two tiny little lives hanging in the balance, we never could have imagined the life we live today. As difficult as it was for this planner to let go and realize that our lives are going to go according to His plan not mine, I have learned to let go. Every day is a new adventure and I look forward to each and every one of them!
